It prefers cool, slightly moist soils. It helps combat soil erosion (embankments, undergrowth). It tolerates drought and short mowing and adapts to poor soils with a pH ranging from 5.0 to 6.5. It fixes atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen that can be assimilated by the roots via nodules associated with the rootlets.
Characteristic specific to the legume family: Slow growth and propagation by stolons.
