What is polymer sand?

What is polymeric sand?

Polymeric sand is sifted sand mixed with a polymer binder which, once activated with water, hardens and creates a strong bond between pavers or slabs .

Unlike traditional sand which can be washed away by rain or wind, polymeric sand becomes almost like a flexible mortar which stabilizes joints and helps keep your installation clean and durable.

What makes Richer Polymeric Sand special?

The Richer Polymeric Sand that we sell is a high-performance product designed for paving and slab joints:

  • Mixture of high-quality sand + polymer binder

  • Hardens after watering

  • Resistant to temperature changes

  • Easy to install (when the steps are followed)

  • Helps prevent the growth of weeds and ant nests

  • Suitable for residential and commercial areas

  • Can be used on flat or sloping surfaces

Available in several colors:

  • Beige
  • Gray
  • Black
  • White

Why use polymeric sand rather than ordinary sand?

1. Stability & durability

Once activated, it forms a solid joint that prevents the movement of paving stones or slabs , especially in high-traffic areas.

2. Resistance to erosion

Unlike conventional sand which can be washed away by rain or watering, polymeric sand resists leaching and keeps joints full for longer.

3. Weed and pest control

The polymers create a barrier that inhibits weed growth and discourages insects from settling in the joints.

4. Clean and aesthetically pleasing appearance

It gives a uniform and finished look to patios, walkways and terraces — available in colors that complement your pavers.

Where to use it?

Polymeric sand is ideal for:

  • Patios

  • Walkways and sidewalks

  • Garage entrances

  • Poolside

  • Pedestrian zones and light to medium traffic zones

Installation tips (essential principles)

For best results:

  1. Ensure that the paving stones/slabs are clean and dry before application.

  2. Spread the sand evenly and fill the joints well.

  3. Gently sprinkle water in a fine spray to activate the binder — avoid soaking.

  4. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours without rain after watering.

A good compactor (vibrating plate) helps to better compact the sand in the joints, especially for large areas.

Some points to know

Although polymeric sand offers many advantages, it requires proper installation :

  • Errors in application or humid conditions can reduce its effectiveness.

  • And like any specialized product, it costs more than ordinary sand , but it can save time and maintenance in the long run.
